Katalix Systems (http://www.katalix.com) has developed PPP Access Concentrator software for use with OpenL2TP. The Katalix Access Concentrator (KAC) is implemented as a separate Linux process and is designed to support PPPoE, PPPoATM and serial PPP connections, tunneling the PPP sessions through L2TP tunnels using OpenL2TP. All PPP data packets are handled entirely by the kernel using a new kernel driver that sits alongside the new pseudowire drivers which are being developed for L2TPv3. No pppd process is needed per PPP session. It is therefore now possible to tunnel many thousands of PPP sessions over L2TP using a typical Linux PC.

At this time, only PPPoE connections are supported. In the case of PPPoE, service selection (i.e. which L2TP tunnel to use) is done using the requested PPPoE service name. L2TP tunnels can be created on demand or an existing tunnel can be used. The ability to choose which tunnel based on a RADIUS lookup is planned but not yet implemented. KAC is implemented with the network operator in mind too. For example, as a troubleshooting aid, debug may be enabled for a specific user or MAC address, which avoids too much debug on a busy system where many other users are already connected.

KAC is not open source. Binary packages will be made available free to non-commercial users and will support a limited number of PPP connections. Software licences may be purchased to enable more PPP sessions, as required. Thus, anyone can download and use the software to try it out at no cost.

KAC 1.0 is scheduled for release early in 2009. If anyone is interested in beta testing the software, please contact us at sales@katalix.com. It is hoped that beta versions will be available in December 2008.

Just a quick note to say that work on KAC is delayed because we're working on other L2TP-related projects for a customer.
